Philip Sidetes

Philip Sidetes
(early fifth century)
   Historian.
Philip was born in Side, Pamphylia, but he later settled in Constantinople. He was the author of a large history, Christianike Historia, which seems to have covered the period from the creation of the world until ad 430. Only a small section still survives. He was a friend of John chrysostom and he is primarily remembered for his claim that both james, the apostle, and his brother John were martyred by the Jews. Although the Book of Acts reports James’s death, the majority of authorities claim that John survived to a great age and died naturally.
